Introduction:

Did you see that kitten in the bushes?

One day in mid September 2006 I was coming home, walking towards the 12 story brick apartment building built where I live, and I saw something dart into the bushes in front of the building. I crouched down to see (keeping my distance) and found myself looking at a small black and white kitten who was looking right at me. As I squatted there I tried to project a comforting "It's OK" thought message to the kitten. She stared right at me for 5-10 seconds but then she darted away with lightning speed.

I asked someone working at a shelter what I should do. He suggested I put out food and water for it, but beyond that was short on ideas. I procrastinated a few days, asking other building residents and the maintenance person if they'd seen the black and white kitten. Two people had seen him/her. I thought about giving her a home myself but hesitated. I saw the kitten a second time for a few seconds before she ran off, and it melted away all of my procrastination. I went to a local pet supply and grooming store, the Bark Bark Club, and the owner was encouraging and I left with some of their best super healthy cat/kitten food. I had begun to find clear, informative and compelling websites on the internet telling me all about what regular people can do about stray and feral cats and kittens. (see Links page)

I started to hide food and water in the bushes near where people had seen the kitten hiding. Sure enough, the food would disappear gradually during the day. Someone told me they'd seen the kitten near the bushes where the food was hidden. I pretty much assumed the kitten was eating it, since rats and other animals would only come out at night. I prayed I would see proof and I couldn't believe when one evening I actually got it. I was in front of the building talking with a resident about the kitten around sunset and I saw the kitten walk right to the food and stay there to eat it. She was 20 feet away from us behind a fence plus it was somewhat dark so I think that gave her enough confidence. Feral cats have learned to mistrust humans in order to survive so they normally would not eat in your presence. After seeing that proof that I really had been feeding the black and white kitten I was so thrilled I was like a kid on Christmas morning. I was going to be able to trap this precious little kitten.
